Los
Camellos
Lo triste es así...
- Peter Altenberg
Two weary camels, with smoothly moving heads, with clear, green eyes and silky, fair skin, necks drawn back, noses distended, with long steps measure a stretch of Nubian sand. |
Alzaron
They
raised their heads to see where they are going, and then the sleepy progress
of their downy legs -- beneath
the reddish cupola of that fiery zenith – silently they stop, at the foot
of the cisterns ... |
For almost five years they carry a load below the magnificent sky, and their eyes now are burned by tormenting fever: perhaps they have read, in their wisdom, a faded hieroglyphic lost among the ruins of an ill-fated monument. |
Vagando
Silently
wandering across the carpet fallen asleep when the dying day closes its
eyes, below the black virgin who led them in the dark, they mimicked the
march of melancholy. |
They
are sons of the Desert: the palm-tree lent them a broad, swaying neck,
|
The
atoms of gold which the whirlwind scatters wanted to be a graceful,
spinning garment, and, their necks linked by an invisible yoke, they
saw the emaciated, hump-backed shape.
|
All
the trouble, all the fever, all the hunger, the thirst without water,
|
Neither the slender myrrhs, nor the tawny skins, nor the swaying palms that water a friendly shade, nor the sonorous sound of jingling bells mitigate the king’s visions of weariness. |
¡Bebed
Drink
pain in them, Byzantine flutists, you who love to polish the dactyl to
the sound of the chains, only those eyes may tell you the fatigue of a
moribund world without blood in its veins! |
¡Oh
O
artists! O camels of the vast plain you travel, carrying on your backs
the sacred Monolith. Sorrowing for the Sphinx! bridegrooms of the chaste
Palm-tree!
|
What
can grim stares do? What can the long hair of the clawing tribes achieve
|
The
wandering caravan is lost in the distance, leaving me – camel that Destruction
rode ... how to find his tracks
in the morning sun, among the grey waves of dark nausea! |
¡No!
No!
I shall seek two eyes that I have seen, pure fountain today for my dried-up
lip, and I shall patiently wait until in filaments of mystic sweetness
it slakes my heart with painful lyric. |
Y
And
if at my side the deaf crowd goes by while I look deeply into those
eyes |
