Cure at Troy

by Seamus Heaney

produced at the American Repertory Theatre’s Institute for Advanced Training.

This is the story of Ulysses and Neoptolemus’ struggle to convince Philoctetes to return to Troy with them from the island of Lemnos, to which Ulysses had condemned Philoctetes ten years earlier. Philoctetes possesses Hercules’ bow, which the Greeks have learned they must have to win the Trojan war. Ulysses has sent Neoptolemus (Achilles’son) ashore to try and talk Philoctetes into coming back, and the bulk of the piece is between these two.

It takes place in the cave Philoctetes has settled in as his home on this volcanic island.
