About Us

The Sweethearts host three major concerts each year including "Battle" (see below). We also participate in various gigs throughout the year, and frequently sing on Newbury Street on weekends.

In February 2008, we competed in the ICCAs (International Championship of Colligate A cappella) for the first time. Not only did we win 2nd Runner Up and Best Choreography in the Regional round, but we also were the only Boston University group to represent in the Semi-final round in March, 2008.

The Sweethearts are eight members strong (a double-quartet), with two girls per voice part. The group focuses on the blend and harmonization. While we are rooted in our barbershop ways, we have fun integrating more modern sounds into our repertoire.

History of the Sweethearts

The Barbershop Sweethearts began in 2002, founded by Gillian
Sowray (alumni 2005) and a few cohorts. Thanks to Gillian's vision
and the great dedication of our members, the Barbershop
Sweethearts have grown and improved each year.

"The Battle of the Sexes"
Part of the Barbershop Sweethearts' history includes our annual benefit concert "The Battle of the Sexes." Each year we raise
money for Jane Doe, Inc. , the Massachusetts Coalition against
Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. Battle was started during founder Gillian's last year and has continued to be a Sweethearts legacy. We are proud to support such a worthy organization.
