For all things ballroom
If you don't see your question here please email us at ballroom@bu.edu
Lessons
How much experience do I need to join?
None. Zero. You can start in our beginners lesson. Check our
lessons page for more info.
Who teaches the lessons?
Our Latin and Rhythm lessons are taught by Helle Rusholt-Yi from Extreme DanceSport in Cambridge.
The Standard and Smooth Lessons are taught by Amanda Clark.
What should I wear?
Dancing is a workout, so wear something comfortable that you can stretch in. Jeans and baggy pants are not acceptable in the Intermediate and Advanced classes.
Are grad students allowed to join?
Yes. Any student curently studying at BU may join, however dues are different costs for Graduate students.
Competition
Is it okay if I don't compete?
Yes. Most members end up competing at some point, but if you think competition isn't for you, you're still welcome to join the team and take the lessons.
What are competitions like?
Check out our competition guide
here
How do I find a partner to dance with?
Ask another person on the team if they'd like to compete with you. Same sex couples are okay too! Ask an eboard member to help you find a partner if you are interested in competing.
What do I wear?
For beginners, look at our guide
here.
We also have a small communal wardrobe with some dresses and shoes that can be rented from the team.
Cost
How much are dues?
Udergraduate dues are $65 for your first semester and $75 each semester thereafter. Graduate student dues are $110. The cost difference is due to the Undergraduate Student Fee (USF), which is charged to every undergraduate student's account. This USF can then be allocated to groups like us to help pay for lessons, travel, competitions and event expenses, therefore their dues are lower. Membership dues cover bi-weekly lessons for the semester, open practice time on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The few Non-BU Students will have to pay for FitRec membership and should talk to a treasurer about the dues required of them. Feel free to talk to the Assistant Treasurer about payment options at the beginning of the semester.
Does it cost money to compete?
Registration is typically $30 - 45 per competition. Competition fees must be paid before registering for the competition.
Do I need dancing shoes?
After you've been dancing awhile you will probably want to invest in a pair of shoes designed for ballroom and latin dancing.
These shoes are lightweight, flexible, and have suede bottoms. They run $60-$120 depending on the model. Ask an eboard member about
shoe recommendations.
