Constitution of the
Boston University Chapter of
Alpha Eta Mu Beta

ARTICLE I
- NAME
The name of this organization shall be the Boston University Chapter of
Alpha Eta Mu Beta.
ARTICLE II
- PURPOSE
The purpose of the Boston University Chapter of Alpha Eta Mu Beta shall be
to bring into closer union and to mark in an outstanding manner those
Biomedical Engineers at Boston University who have manifested a deep
interest and marked ability in their chosen life work so as to promote an
understanding of their profession and to develop its members
professionally.
ARTICLE III
- MEMBERSHIP
- Section 1. Active Membership
a. Active membership shall be open to junior and senior students in
Biomedical Engineering at Boston University who are in good and regular
standing.
b. Only those juniors who have maintained a scholastic grade point average
of 3.5/4.0 and those seniors who have maintained a grade point average of
3.3/4.0 shall be eligible for active membership. Candidates for membership
shall have completed at least six semester credit hours of Biomedical
Engineering courses.
c. Candidates for membership in Boston University Chapter of Alpha Eta Mu
Beta, in addition to the above stated requirements, must be of
unimpeachable character, have ability to make use of the knowledge and
information acquired, have capacity and willingness for hard work, and
have genial nature and ability to work in harmony with all sorts of people.
The conduct of all members shall at all times meet the high standards of
Boston University and Alpha Eta Mu Beta.
d. Transfer students ranked as juniors or seniors in the Biomedical
Engineering program who have transferred from some other institution or
school or from some other department in Boston University shall be eligible
for active membership provided they have maintained a scholastic grade
point average as stated in (b) above and provided they maintain this
average for one term after the transfer. In all cases, candidates for
membership shall have completed at least six semester hours of Biomedical
Engineering courses.
e. Graduate students may be eligible for active membership provided they
are in regular standing or candidates for a degree and have a written
recommendation from the Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
Graduate student candidates shall have been graduated from a University of
recognized standing and shall possess substantially the same scholastic and
other qualifications as required for undergraduate membership.
- Section 2. Election of Members
Election of members shall be conducted by secret ballot. A three-quarter
vote of all active members present shall be required to elect a person to
membership.
ARTICLE IV
- OFFICERS
- Section 1. Officers
The offices of the Boston University Chapter of Alpha Eta Mu Beta shall be
President, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer.
- Section 2. Duties
The duties of the President shall be to organize and guide the chapter, and
to preside over meetings. The Vice President shall preside over meetings
that the President is unable to attend and aid the President in any way
needed. The Secretary-Treasurer shall record the minutes of all meetings
and keep an accurate account of all finances of the chapter.
- Section 3. Term of Office.
Officers shall be elected at the end of the Spring term to serve during the
next year. Each term of office shall last one year. Officers shall be
elected by a simple majority of a quorum of members. A quorum of members
shall be one-half of the active membership.
- Section 4. Faculty Advisor
In addition to these officers, there shall be a faculty advisor. The
faculty advisor shall be one of the Biomedical Engineering Department's
faculty members. The duties of the faculty advisor shall be to attend all
meetings, help the organization with its affairs, and promote good relations
between the faculty and the University and the members of the Boston
University Chapter of Alpha Eta Mu Beta. The faculty advisor shall be
elected by a simple majority of a quorum of members.
ARTICLE V
- MEETINGS
- Section 1. Number of Meetings
At least three official meetings shall be held each semester.
- Section 2. Special Meetings
Special Meetings may be called by the President.
- Section 3. Motions
A simple majority shall be required to decide in favor of a motion.
ARTICLE VI
- COMMITTEES
Committees may be appointed when projects arise that require the work of a
committee. The President shall appoint the committee chairperson and
committee members.
ARTICLE VII
- AMENDMENTS
Amendments to this constitution may be proposed by any member at any
official meeting. Amendments must receive a positive vote from
three-fourths of the total number of members.
