This semester, AED hopes to establish several committees that will be responsible for various aspects of the organization. The committees will be small groups of students who will convene during general meetings and may also meet/communicate outside of meetings.
After committee sign-ups, the E-board will also provide information about positions for committee leadership. Committee leaders will be in frequent contact with the E-board and may attend some of the weekly E-board meetings.
The following is a list of six committees that are being considered for this semester. The list and individual responsibilities of each committee may be subject to future modification.
Spring 2007 Committees (Alphabetical Order)
(Subject to Change)
- Community Service: Responsible for organizing AED service activities on- and off-campus. In the past, activities have included various charity walks, food drives, and gifts to non-profit organizations. Expected to coordinate at least one activity each month. An upcoming event is the 3rd annual LIVERight 5k Run/Walk in Boston on April 28th to benefit the Hepatitis B Initiative (HBI). A member of HBI may be speaking at our general meeting.
- Outreach: In charge of establishing connections/networks within the various health fields in order to coordinate pre-health-related events, such as special guest speakers, hospital or school tours, CPR classes, and other activities that would be beneficial to pre-health students.
-
Parker Hill/Fenway (PHF) Neighborhood Service Center: Since last semester, AED has worked to forge a relationship with PHF. Committee members will be in contact with PHF to plan activities and special events for the seniors at PHF. These activities may include simple arts/crafts sessions as well as basic computer sessions (PHF has a computer lab onsite). Surveys completed last year by the seniors also indicate interest in music and culture. Seniors regularly meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11AM-2PM. Students that are unable to volunteer onsite can still contribute to activity planning. Volunteering will not necessarily be done on a weekly basis.
PHF is located at 714 Parker Street in Roxbury, MA near the Longwood Medical and Mission Hill areas.
-
Social: Responsible for planning social activities throughout the semester that encourage interaction and networking between AED members and can also include other BU student groups or prehealth students. Examples include ice breakers at meetings, group meals in the dining hall, or group viewings of movies or shows (which don’t have to be prehealth-related). They will also be responsible for organizing the end-of-the-year party taking place in April.
-
Special Events: Will be assigned miscellaneous tasks such as promotional advertising and recruitment. A huge upcoming event will be the health symposium on drug addiction, and committee members may be asked to speak to different classes or student groups to advertise the event. They would be responsible for the MCAT Auction, which takes place annually in the fall. They may also supplement the Outreach and Community Service Committees.
-
Web Design: Responsible for the group website at people.bu.edu/aed. The website will be updated periodically with announcements and pictures from group events. We hope to expand the website and update different links and resources. Prior experience with web design is appreciated, but not required.
